Discover 1870 Restaurant And Bar

Walking into 1870 Restaurant And Bar feels like stepping into a place that already knows you. I stopped by on a busy Friday evening after a long week, and within minutes it was clear why locals around 13310 Midlothian Tpke, Midlothian, VA 23113, United States keep recommending it in conversations and reviews. The dining room balances rustic charm with a modern edge, and the bar hums with just enough energy to feel lively without being overwhelming.

I’ve spent years visiting diners and neighborhood restaurants for both work and personal enjoyment, and one thing that stands out here is how intentionally the menu is built. Instead of overwhelming you with endless options, it focuses on comfort food classics elevated with thoughtful ingredients. During my visit, I watched a server explain the preparation of a signature burger to a nearby table, mentioning how the beef is sourced from regional suppliers and ground in-house. That attention to process shows up on the plate. The burger arrived juicy, evenly cooked, and layered with flavors that didn’t compete but complemented each other.

The kitchen seems to follow a method many culinary professionals recommend: fewer items, better execution. According to research published by the National Restaurant Association, restaurants with focused menus often achieve higher customer satisfaction because consistency improves when chefs aren’t stretched thin. You can taste that philosophy here, especially in dishes like their slow-braised meats and house-made sides, which require time, patience, and technique rather than shortcuts.

The bar program deserves its own mention. I spoke briefly with the bartender, who explained how they rotate seasonal cocktails based on availability and guest feedback. That practice aligns with what many beverage experts, including the James Beard Foundation, encourage-menus that evolve with seasons and local tastes. My drink was balanced, not overly sweet, and paired surprisingly well with the food, which isn’t always the case in casual dining spots.

What also adds to the experience is how the staff handles the room. There’s an ease to the service that comes from training and experience, not scripts. When I asked about popular items, the server didn’t just list them but explained why people love them, referencing repeat guests and weekend regulars. That kind of insight only comes from actually listening to customers over time.

Online reviews often mention the welcoming atmosphere and dependable quality, and after multiple visits, I can confirm that consistency is one of this place’s strengths. Whether it’s a quieter weekday dinner or a packed weekend night, the food and service hold steady. That reliability builds trust, especially for diners who don’t want surprises when choosing where to eat.

Of course, no restaurant is perfect. On especially busy nights, wait times can stretch longer than expected, and parking along Midlothian Turnpike can be tight. Still, the staff is upfront about delays, and that transparency goes a long way. From an industry standpoint, honest communication is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to maintain customer confidence.

Overall, this restaurant fits comfortably into the local dining scene while still feeling distinctive. It blends a thoughtful menu, a well-run bar, and experienced service into something that feels genuine rather than forced. For anyone exploring restaurants in Midlothian or looking for a spot that locals actually return to, this one has clearly earned its place through consistent execution and an understanding of what keeps people coming back.

  • 1870 Restaurant is an exceptional dining experience, and I feel incredibly fortunate that such a high-caliber establishment is located right here in Midlothian. This is a truly superb choice for dining and relaxing, offering a variety of excellent options across multiple levels. Downstairs, The Speakeasy is a cozy, comfortable, and private spot perfect for gathering with friends for drinks or dinner. The Speakeasy is tucked into the lower level of the old building, accessible down the stairs past the hostess station and also by a lower level door just before the main entrance. It's a bit ironic, but The Speakeasy is definitely a great spot where you might not have to worry too much about keeping your voice down! We have been to several private dinners or celebrations here, and every time the setting and provisions have been absolutely perfect. Upstairs is a beautifully appointed bar with a screened balcony and a pair of private dining rooms, replete with 150-year-old wood floors, plaster walls and full of charm and ambiance. The daily happy hour food specials offer a wonderful chance to sample a range of small plates with the flair you expect from Chef Dunlap. We appreciate the separate exits for both The Speakeasy and the upstairs bar, allowing guests to bypass the main dining room if desired. We also really like the fact the restaurant accepts online reservations for all of the seating areas, including seats at the bar or high tops, making it easy to plan a nice, stress-free experience with just a little bit of foresight. The real star, though, is the main floor dining room. It is a beautiful setting, rich with history but smartly decorated for a proper fine dining experience. We rarely venture past the beef because all of the prime beef (and especially the dry aged ribeye) is always of the highest quality, perfectly cooked, and well-accompanied by a nice range of sauces, butters, and sides. Paired with a nice bottle of wine and good company, 1870 offers the perfect way to slow down and truly enjoy life. David, Brittany, and the team have done a great job turning a piece of Midlothian history into a high-quality culinary destination. This is a must-visit!

  • We had a birthday party here for a family member with nine people total. The drinks were excellent (try the Barbie). The entrees (I got the scallops) were outstanding. The entrees (steak, fish, lamb) were superbly cooked. The side dishes were excellent as well. Try the bread pudding for dessert! Jacob gave us great service throughout the evening. We all give 1870 our thanks for a wonderful evening!

  • July 2025 well this is a new one...went there on a Thursday with friends and had been craving the steaks, so thats what we did along with melt in your mouth scallop perfection. Lobster bisque was a bit thin for my liking, but flavor and flaky pastry topper were well matched. We were in the neighborhood and ended goin back the next night and got the mussles, pork chop, and flounder!!! UNREAL! Best pork chop i have ever eaten--i cant even think of a close second!! If they have a specialty sauteed wild mushroom option--JUST GET IT!! You'll be glad u did!! This place never disappoints!! Jan 2025 Another fantastic visit! Was my daughter's birthday and they provided one of the best meals we have all ever had. Whatever your favorite steak is, I can tell you that the steaks are all best-in-class! Ribeye, strip, filet, and hanger were all wonderful and the accompanying butters and sauces were to die for. Waitress did a wonderful menu tour that set us up for the best experience possible. The sides were also incredible. We got one of each of the desserts, which were all perfect ways to finish the evening! Heres the lowdown: oldest building around with some local history printed inside the menu(nice touch), private rooms available, speak-easy coming soon to the basement, and possibly 4th floor coming as well and outside balcony seating! Ate in upstairs low-lit dining room. Food was exquisite! Everything was seriously fantastic...probably in my top 10 meals of my life. Scallop appetizer amazing, filet and ribeyes perfectly cooked and the au poive was awesome! Roasted carrots, spinach, and mushrooms were all elevated with amazing herbs and complementary ingredients(ie roasted pine nuts, honey, tarragon, cream, parm, gruyere, etc.) And to top it all off-- Blueberry-lavender Cheesecake!!! Don't skip that!!!

  • We came in for our anniversary dinner. The service (Aidan) was amazing. We enjoyed the extensive wine list. The bread and butter was perfect. The oysters on the half shell with special creamy bacon sauce and sherry vinegar were so good. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. All in all, it could not have been better! We will be back and plan to send others as well!

  • We had a 6:30 Saturday reservation for two and were seated right away on the screened-in balcony, which turned out to be a great spot—especially with the perfect weather. The building itself is charming, with some neat Chesterfield history, and the setting added to the experience. For food, we ordered the ribeye with creamy spinach and the duck with roasted carrots. The 20oz ribeye was cooked exactly to temperature and had good flavor, though the garlic butter was a bit overpowering. It was a solid steak overall, but at $76, I’m not sure it quite justified the price—there are better options in Richmond at that tier. The creamy spinach was rich but heavy, with the Gruyère weighing it down. The duck, on the other hand, had excellent flavor. The skin was beautifully crispy, and the caramelized onion butter paired really well. It was just slightly overcooked, which held it back from being perfect. The roasted carrots had an interesting twist in flavor but worked well with the dish. Service was a highlight of the night. Our server was warm, friendly, and impressively knowledgeable about the menu and pairings. She struck the right balance of attentive without hovering. Overall, it was a very good evening—atmosphere and service were excellent, and the food was strong but fell just short of the premium pricing.
